Custer Country is home to the Bighorn and the Pryor Mountains. The Bighorns surround Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area, and for two centuries one of the few wild horse herds in the United States have called the Pryor Mountains home. This loop provides an ever-changing panoramic view of these beautiful geological formations. To begin the tour, proceed southeast on I-90 to Hardin, where you can stop for lunch, shop in one of the city’s unique businesses or  stroll through the Big Horn County Historical Museum.  From Hardin, take Highway 313 south to St. Xavier, where you’ll turn west and head to Pryor, and Chief Plenty Coups State Park.  Located in the park is the house of Chief Plenty Coups, a Crow leader who donated his home “not to be a memorial to me, but to the Crow Nation….as a token of my friendship for all people both red and white.”  The park grounds include a memorial to Chief Plenty Coups and a visitor center, where you can learn more about the life of this memorable peacemaker.  After a relaxing stroll through the serene grounds of this park, travel north on Hwy. 418 to Billings and follow the signs to Pictograph State Park.  Here you will find some of the most unique and varied pre-historic and Native American cave paintings in the area.  Completing this loop takes about four hours and covers approximately 150 miles.  Enjoy the wildlife, geology and varied plant life along the route.  >>Click for map
